About John Riddle‑Jones

I am an event rider, young horse producer, and 2★ competitor with clear ambitions to progress to 3★ and beyond. My journey with horses began at a young age with Heineken, a 15.2hh Heavyweight Cob X, who taught me the foundations of riding on quiet countryside lanes and in local showjumping and handy‑pony classes. At just 11 years old, I worked after school at local kennels and saved enough in ten weeks to buy my first pony, Garfield (Dyrfal Marvel), a 4‑year‑old unbroken 12.2hh Welsh Section C. Breaking him in myself taught me patience, partnership, and the value of producing a horse correctly from the very beginning.

Although I stepped back at times to care for ill family members, my passion for riding never faded. I returned to producing young horses, taking on another unbroken 15.2hh and rebuilding my path in the sport. After completing my studies, I spent four formative years at Ruxton Horses under the guidance of Melanie and Emma Slater, whose mentorship in showjumping, dressage, and horse management shaped the technical foundation I rely on today.

A major milestone in my career came in 2003 when I was mentored by Triple Olympic Gold Medallist Matt Ryan. Our work together resumed in 2016, influencing my approach to competition planning, horse fitness, and long‑term development. With his guidance, I progressed to 2★ level and continue to work toward achieving 3★ and beyond. I now ride under my married name, supported by my husband Jake, and together we are producing our homebred four‑year‑old, Redlea Royal Windsor, a promising young horse who represents the future of our eventing team.

My philosophy is simple: producing horses for the future, not the now. I take the time to develop each horse correctly, without shortcuts or gadgets, ensuring they understand their job, build confidence, and grow into sound, willing athletes for the long term.
